In reference to our Alert of yesterday (pasted below), we are happy to inform you that the seven doctors detained yesterday in Venezuela arrived in Miami earlier today safely, albeit tired.
They were reportedly released last night by Venezuelan immigration authorities after long sessions with Cuban State Security and Venezuelan officials. Forced to surrender the money they were carrying, they were then taken to the Maquetía (Caracas) airport, where they spent the night without a place to sleep. Early this morning, they boarded the flight they were scheduled to take yesterday. As soon as they arrived in Miami, friends who greeted them took them to Catholic Charities, where they will receive initial assistance. They now start new lives with nothing more than the few personal belongings they traveled with.
Several Cuban doctors who have in recent months left Venezuela with visas for the United States have reported similar incidents at Maquetía airport. Authorities there are demanding their hard-earned savings under the threat of handing them over to Cuban State Security for deportation to Cuba.

Urgent Alert: Seven Cuban doctors detained in Venezuela prevented from travel to U.S.
Seven Cuban doctors were detained early this morning by Venezuelan authorities at Caracas (Maquetía) Airport and prevented from boarding a flight to Miami. Reportedly, all seven held visas to enter the United States granted under the “Cuban Medical Professional Parole Program.” This afternoon, it was reported that, their passports having been seized, they were being transferred to Immigration Headquarters in Caracas. Colleagues recently arrived in the United States fear they will all be deported to Cuba, where they will face reprisals.
The names and mobile phones of some are known, although attempts to reach them by phone have been intercepted by unknown parties:

Over 2,000 Cuban health professionals deserted worldwide and obtained visas for the United States from 2006 to 2009. At least 500 doctors have escaped in Venezuela in recent years.

Aviso sobre médicos cubanos detenidos ayer en Venezuela

Con relación a nuestra Alerta de ayer (ver abajo), nos complace informarles que los siete médicos cubanos detenidos en Venezuela arribaron hoy a Miami en buen estado, aunque cansados.
Se informó que las autoridades venezolanas les permitieron regresar anoche al aeropuerto de Maquetía (Caracas) luego de entrevistarse con agentes de Seguridad de Estado cubana y de entregar el dinero que llevaban. Pasaron la noche en el aeropuerto sin poder dormir para partir esta mañana hacia Miami en el mismo vuelo que debían haber tomado ayer. Tan pronto llegaron, fueron trasladados a las oficinas de ayuda humanitaria de la Iglesia Católica, Arquidiocesis de Miami. Ahora comienzan nuevas vidas sólo con las pocas pertenencias con las cuales pudieron viajar.
Varios médicos cubanos que han salido de Venezuela recientemente con visas para los Estados Unidos han relatado similares experiencias en el aeropuerto de Maquetía. Allí, las autoridades de aduana les requieren entregar el dinero que portan, el que han podido ahorrar con grandes esfuerzos, bajo amenaza de entregarlos a Seguridad de Estado cubana para su traslado a Cuba.

ALERTA URGENTE: Siete médicos cubanos detenidos en Venezuela, prohibido su viaje a EEUU
Temprano esta mañana autoridades de Venezuela detuvieron a siete médicos cubanos en el aeropuerto de Caracas (Maquetía) y les prohibieron abordar su vuelo a Miami. Se ha informado que todos tenían visas para entrar a los Estados Unidos bajo el programa de visas especiales para profesionales de la salud cubanos sirviendo en el exterior. En la tarde, fueron trasladados a la oficina central de Inmigración en Caracas luego de que sus pasaportes les fueran confiscados.
Colegas recién llegados a los Estados Unidos temen que sus amigos serán deportados a Cuba, donde sufrirán represalias.
Se conocen los nombres y teléfonos de algunos de los detenidos, pero al intentar ubicarlos por teléfono, las llamadas fueron interceptadas por desconocidos:

Entre el 2006 y el 2009 más de 2,000 profesionales de la salud cubanos desertaron en diversos países y lograron emigrar a los Estados Unidos. Se informa que alrededor de 500 médicos han escapado de Venezuela en los últimos años.
